OVER 20,000 PROFESSIONALS VISITED THE SIXTEENTH EDITION OF SIPIEL

The sixteenth edition of SIPIEL, International Leather Week, which took place at Feria de Madrid between Thursday 23rd and Saturday 25th March, ended with some excellent results. The Week, which is made up of MODACALZADO, the International Footwear Trade Fair, and IBERPIEL MARROQUINERIA, the International Leather Goods Trade Fair, welcomed a total of 20,065 professionals, a large number of whom presented a higher purchasing level than at previous editions, whilst extending their stay at the fair to two days.
The total number of visitors at this edition represented a reduction of 6.6% compared to the same edition in 2005 - when the fair took place between Friday and Sunday -, mainly as a result of the lower levels of attendance on the part of non-exhibiting manufacturers, pattern cutters, etc., who attended the event on Sunday in order to establish contacts and discover the latest trends on the market.
With regard to the attendance of foreign visitors, SIPIEL welcomed some 3,186 professionals from some 71 different countries. We might highlight the increased number of visitors from distant countries such as Russia, Japan and the United States, not to mention Mexico, Poland and the United Arab Emirates. This was partly the result of the proximity of the staging of two other events, MICAM and MIPEL.
Within Spain itself, some 16,879 national buyers were recorded. The largest number of professionals attended the event from the Valencian Region, which was also the part of Spain that presented the largest increase in representation compared to previous editions. Following the Valencian professionals, we might highlight the strong levels of representation from Madrid, Catalonia and Galicia, with professionals from these areas also attending the event in increased numbers.
Satisfaction at the Volume of Operations
SIPIEL once again took place between Thursday and Saturday and, in general terms, the exhibitors revealed a high level of satisfaction regarding the fair dates and the volume of operations they secured.
This trade fair, which is organised by IFEMA and constitutes the third most important event of its kind in Europe for the footwear and leather goods sectors, brought together some 744 companies from around the world, with their ideas for the Autumn-Winter 2006/07 Season. These ideas were presented in a net exhibition area measuring more than 36,000 square metres.
Jesús Candil, Head of the Spanish Government´s Industrial Development Department, was responsible for inaugurating SIPIEL on Thursday 23rd March. The opening ceremony was attended by a number of important figures, including Pedro Sanz, Head of the Regional Government of La Rioja. The following day, the Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, José Montilla, also enjoyed a tour of the fair.
Ten Years Doing Business at MODACALZADO
Pedro García, Magrit, Ferrerías, Diesel, Levi’s, Lottusse, Martinelli, Pons Quintana, Sara Navarro, Looky, Patricia, Barrats, Castañer, Gorg Blau, Jaime Mascaró, Pura López, Romu’s, Kollflex, Salvador Sapena, Havainana, Stonefly, Robert Clergerie, Sonia Rykiel, Miguel Vieira, Mephisto, Primigi and Dorotea are some of the brands that have participated at this edition of MODACALZADO.
The fair, which celebrated its tenth anniversary at this edition, brought together some 618 companies, 151 from abroad. Among the nearly 470 Spanish companies, the Valencian Region presented the largest number of exhibitors, followed by representatives from the Balearic Islands, La Rioja, Castile-La Mancha and Aragón.
The recently concluded edition of MODALZADO produced some favourable results for the participating companies. According to Ignacio Ñiguez, from Pikolinos, ´fairs must always be valued favourably, because they provide an excellent opportunity to meet clients, who on this occasion revealed a higher level of professionalism and a greater decision-making capacity´. Magda Pons, from Pons Quintana, was of the same opinion, defining the visitors to MODACALZADO as being ´of high stature, matching the products being presented to them´.
According to Angel Infantes, from the company of the same name, ´the exhibition brought together at MODACALZADO is varied and of high quality, featuring the participation of a large number of strong brands´. For his part, Josep Playa, from Dorotea, referred to the current market trends and highlighted the fact that ´companies that present fashionable products, ensure good communications and carry out an appropriate marketing campaign, operate successfully´.
IBERPIEL MARROQUINERÍA Spanned Two Halls
One of the new features at this edition of IBERPIEL MARROQUINERÍA was the location of leather clothing in Hall 2, whilst leather bags and accessories were presented in Hall 4. As a whole, the fair brought together some 126 exhibitors, including names such as Lupo, Olimpo, Manuel Acosta, Nobuck, Guy Laroche, Miriam Gallego, Puntotres, Gilmart and Le Tanneur. These brands occupied a net exhibition area measuring 6,000 square metres.
At this edition of IBERPIEL MARROQUINERÍA, ´the attendance of the public was excellent´, according to Josep María Morenete, from the company Lupo, ´and this was reflected in the increase in sales´. ´As far as the visitor profile is concerned, the stature of the buyers was higher; they were more specialized and more demanding. They sought quality and design´, he stated.
Successful Coinciding Events
SIPIEL featured a number of different coinciding events that aroused a considerable level of interest on the part of all professionals attending the fair. Staged within the framework of MODACALZADO, the exhibition entitled ´Reinventing Footwear´, located in Hall 2, was very warmly received. This event showed just how successfully designers from outside the world of footwear can be matched with a selection of manufacturers to present some marvellous creations. In this respect, we might highlight the interesting contributions made by the designers participating in this project and the successful interpretation of their sketches by the manufacturing companies.
Furthermore, on the second day of the fair, the awards presentation ceremony took place for CalzArte, a national photography competition organised by the Cultural Foundation and Footwear Museum of Elda (Alicante). The First Prize went to Miguel Rodríguez Sánchez, for ´Cordones´ (´Laces´); the Second Prize was presented to Pablo Requejo García, for the work entitled ´Ramblas 1 Barcelona´, whilst the work ´Untitled´, by Emilio Moreno Blanco, received the Third Prize. On the same day, the first Dictionary of Footwear Terms (English-Spanish) was presented, published by the Local Council of Elda, at an event that featured the participation, among others, of Salvador Ordóñez, the Spanish Secretary of State for Universities.
Another of the initiatives at this edition of the fair which was warmly received by the industry was the ´Pyramid of Solidarity´, which was built using the shoe donations made by the footwear companies participating at the fair. In total, more than 8,100 pairs of men´s, women´s and children´s shoes, valued at approximately 125,000 euros, were donated by around thirty companies. Now the fair has concluded, the Valora Foundation will be responsible for distributing the shoes to numerous NGO´s throughout Spain. These organizations will then distribute them among the needy.
A new feature presented within the framework of IBERPIEL-MARROQUINERÍA was entitled ´Temptations´. This Exhibition-Showroom, organised by the Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Leather Goods, Travel Items and Related Products (ASEFMA), was conceived in order to boost the fashionable image of Spanish products and designer creations.
MODACALZADO Anniversary Dinner
One of the high-points at this edition of MODACALZADO was the dinner organised by IFEMA to celebrate the Tenth Anniversary of the fair. The dinner was attended by representatives from more than 90 companies that have taken part in every edition of the fair over the last ten years.
During the evening, a series of commemorative plaques were presented to a number of individuals who played a key role in setting up MODACALZADO ten years ago. The award-winners were Leandro Alarcón; Tomás Moreno; Basilio García; Miguel Mesquida and Rafael Calvo, Chairman of the Spanish Federation of Footwear Industries (FICE).
Next edition of SIPIEL will take place between 28th and 30th September at Feria de Madrid and will feature the footwear and leather goods collections for Spring-Summer 2007.
