Almost a million people bought gold objects
At a time when the price of gold on the international market has reached the highest rate ever in the last 25 years (602 dollars) statistics continue to show that the Portuguese are still keen on buying gold objects.
According to the «Consumer 2004» study carried out by Marktest (2005’s profile is still being surveyed and will be publicised in the next few months), the number of people who bought gold objects worth over 250 euros totalled 910,000 in 2004. Now, for a population of about 10 million, this is certainly a figure that the sector’s professionals must consider.
According to the study, the highest percentage of people who bought gold worth over 250 euros live in the Seaside North (11.6%) and Lisbon area (11.4%). They were mainly between 25 and 34 years old (15.1%) or between 45 and 54 years old (13.6%). 19.7% of the people in the upper and upper middle class bought this kind of product whereas this figure falls to 5.9% among the lower classes.
