Presentation of the fair, CONSTRUTEC, and the First International Architecture Congress on "Cutting-Edge Architecture"
Madrid stages the largest event for architecture and building professionals
The staging of CONSTRUTEC to coincide with Architecture Week will make the Madrid Region an obligatory point of reference for all groups connected to this field.
The fair has expanded in all aspects, but especially in terms of international participation. The fair will also incorporate the First Monographic Exhibition on Wood in Architecture. As part of the Specialised Conference Programme, we might also highlight the staging of the First International Architecture Congress on "Cutting-Edge Architecture" at CONSTRUTEC. This morning, 27th September, witnessed the presentation of the ninth edition of the Building Fair, CONSTRUTEC 2006 at IFEMA's facilities at Feria de Madrid. This event will take place between 9th and 12th October next at the Exhibition Centre, coinciding with the First International Architecture Congress on "Cutting-Edge Architecture", which will form part of the fair's Specialised Conference Programme. The presentation was staged by the Head of the Fair, Santiago Quiroga, and the Curator of the Congress, the architect Sergio de Miguel (from the Official College of Architects of Madrid, COAM), among other authorities. The coincidence of these two events with Architecture Week will make the Madrid Region an obligatory point of reference for all architecture and building professionals. In this respect, these groups will be able to combine their enjoyment of a wide-ranging programme of activities, visits and roundtables organised by the COAM Foundation, with their attendance at one of the most important fairs within the industry. The fair will feature the participation of some 1,135 companies, that will present the latest products and materials relating to the field, along with the corresponding computer technology and management techniques and products. The exhibition at CONSTRUTEC has also been strengthened by the significant increase in business participation, based on more than one thousand represented companies. These participants will provide ample proof of their efforts under the heading of R+D. Furthermore, coinciding with the trade exhibition itself, a wide-ranging trade meeting programme will be organised, where professionals will be able to tackle a range of highly topical themes and issues. However, the star meeting of the event will undoubtedly be CONSTRUTEC'S First International Architecture Congress (10th and 11th October), which, under the heading of "Cutting-Edge Architecture", will analyse a series of unique buildings, chosen due to some specific characteristic. Thus, the spotlight, on this occasion, will fall on the buildings, rather than on the architects who built them. The collaboration of the Official College of Architects of Madrid, COAM, was decisive in preparing this Congress, which was also planned to coincide with Architecture Week, an event organised every year by COAM in Madrid. This edition of Architecture Week will be quite special, given that this year is the 75th Anniversary of the founding of COAM, whose Foundation organises the event, featuring the sponsorship of IFEMA, Madrid City Council (Arts Department), the National Association of Architects and the Madrid Underground. The programme includes numerous free events and activities that seek to promote architecture and town-planning within society. In this respect, the COAM Foundation invites numerous institutions and companies linked in some way with the world of architecture to take part in the Week. CONSTRUTEC makes up one of the most comprehensive exhibitions within this field, incorporating a specialised Exhibition on Wood in Architecture on this occasion, as well as Exhibitions on Prefabricated Concrete and Interior Architecture, DECOTEC. Thus, in addition to its general exhibition area, CONSTRUTEC is made up of the First Monographic Exhibition of Wood in Architecture, located in Hall 8 at Feria de Madrid, which presents its own trade area for this booming sector. Visitors will also come across the Second Monographic Prefabricated Concrete Exhibition, located in Hall 10, and the Seventh Interior Architecture Show, DECOTEC, in Hall 8. Growth In total, CONSTRUTEC will bring together some 1,135 represented companies and 635 direct exhibitors, the latter representing an increase of 21 per cent compared to the year 2004. These participants will occupy all ten halls available at the fairground owned by IFEMA, the body that organises the fair. A net exhibition area measuring some 36,415 square metres has been set aside for the fair, a 31 per cent increase compared to 2004. The growth has been particularly significant in the international area, providing testimony to the fact that the fair's stature abroad is also growing. Thus, this year the fair will feature the attendance of 54 foreign direct exhibitors, which is to say, an 8.48 per cent increase compared to the previous edition. These companies will attend from 22 different countries, 9 more than in 2004). If we analyse participation at the fair according to the various exhibitions that make up the event, the general area at CONSTRUTEC will continue to bring together the largest number of companies, featuring 488 direct exhibitors and a net exhibition area measuring 28,433.5 square metres. Next comes the Monographic Exhibition of Wood in Architecture, with 67 companies and an exhibition area measuring 3,389 net square metres. This section is followed by the Interior Architecture Show, DECOTEC, with 48 exhibitors and a net exhibition area measuring some 2,177 metres, and the Monographic Prefabricated Concrete Exhibition, with 32 companies and 2,415 net square metres. A Forum for Debate The event will be completed by a packed programme of trade conferences and activities, which is more wide-ranging than ever. We might highlight CONSTRUTEC'S First International Architecture Congress on "Cutting-Edge Architecture", at which the Official College of Architects of Madrid, COAM, will analyse and present a number of unique buildings, such as the following: a leprosy colony in India; a swimming-centre in China designed in the shape of a bubble; an eco-boulevard in Madrid, which simulates a meadow-like environment; a Natural Sciences Museum in Japan that is resistant to snow-falls of up to 20 metres, and a series of residential buildings in Brazil by the innovative architect, Angelo Bucci. What is more, this Congress will coincide with the staging of the prestigious Architecture Week, which is organised every year by COAM. Furthermore, to mark the staging of the First Monographic Exhibition of Wood in Architecture within the framework of CONSTRUTEC, one of the leading business guilds within this field, AITIM, will tackle the theme of "Wooden Structures for Architecture" (Monday 9th October). Other equally interesting topics that will be addressed at the fair by the corresponding business associations, include the following: "Fire Safety in Buildings" (11th October); "Spanish Steel Regulations" (11th October), and "Galvanised Steel in Building" (10th October). For its part, the Building Industry Labour Foundation will participate in the programme with two activities. On the one hand, it will organise a seminar on 11th October entitled "Promoting Professionalism in the Building Industry and Accreditation of Prevention Training", and, on the other, a Bricklaying Competition, which will take place on 12th October. This competition will feature the participation of a number of previously registered bricklayer/mate pairings, who will be required to build a construction specifically designed for this competition in a particular place and within a particular period of time. Furthermore, the Foundation's stand (located in the connecting area between Halls 6 and 8 at Feria de Madrid), will also feature a number of competitions featuring pulley systems and the assembly of scaffolding. The Spanish Association of Fired Clay Brick and Tile Manufacturers, HISPALYT, which habitually takes part at CONSTRUTEC, will organise a conference on "Architecture, Building and Quality of Life", which will feature the attendance, among other important figures, of the Chairman of the Higher Council of Architecture Colleges of Spain, CSCAE, Carlos Hernández Pezzi (11th October). Other meetings on the CONSTRUTEC 2006 Programme include the following: Conferences on Technology Transfer, organised jointly by the Innovation Liaison Centre, Madrid IRC, and the Higher Council for Scientific Research, CSIC (9th October); Conferences organised by the Spanish Building Technology Forum (10th and 11th October), and the First Conferences on Safety at Height, organised by the specialised magazine, Movicarga (11th October). This fair, aimed strictly at the trade and organised by IFEMA and marketed by ISG, targets architects, surveyors, civil engineers, industrial engineers, builders, developers, stockists, decorators, installers.... The fair will be open every day between 9th and 12th October, from 10.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.
