The number of exhibitors and visitors were up 161% and 38% respectively from 2004.

China's automotive market - key facts

China's auto industry is strongly supported by the Government. It is considered a pillar industry, and car ownership is actively encouraged. Road infrastructure is undergoing constant improvement, with expressways being added at the rate of around 21,000 miles per year, and automotive financing, retailing and distribution networks are being improved.

China became the world's number two automotive market, and the world's number three automotive producer in 2006. Total auto production reached 7.28 million units in 2006, a year-on-year increase of 27%, while sales grew 25% to 7.22 million units; including four million sedans and 320,000 luxury vehicles.

Huge potential in the automotive aftermarket

The automobile population is expected to reach 55 million by 2010. At that time, around 40% of vehicles in China will be at an age where they require a higher level of service & maintenance. It is predicted that China's auto service market will reach a value of 154.2 billion Yuan (US$19.51 billion) by 2010.

The auto after-sales sector has been fully opened to foreign firms through China's World Trade Organization (WTO) commitments. Auto giants such as Volkswagen, Ford and Mercedes-Benz, have all authorized distribution and maintenance to local partners by launching 4S stores, dealing with sales, spare parts, services and surveys. Global operator's expansion in the auto after-sales sector will help stabilize the domestic repair and maintenance market and introduce world-leading technology to China.

China - an important sourcing ground for global buyers

There has been a shift in world production of auto parts to China, which stimulates a fast growing auto parts industry. Global sourcing in China for better quality auto parts and accessories has increased. In 2005, China's export of auto parts exceeded US$10 billion. China aims to lift the value of its vehicle and auto parts exports to US$120 billion, or 10 percent of the world's total vehicle trading volume, over the next decade.

Buyers see Automechanika Shanghai as an important sourcing ground for quality products. Over 12,000 trade visitors from 97 countries & regions visited Automechanika Shanghai 2006, a 38% increase from the previous event. An onsite survey showed that around 90% were involved in purchasing decisions. An impressive 25% of all buyers were from overseas (around 3,000).
